Amid a wave of Marvel Cinematic Universe announcements coming out of San Diego Comic-Con, one significant piece of news may have slipped under the radar — Wonder Man has been officially canceled at Disney+.

What We Know About the Cancellation

According to Variety, season two of Wonder Man has been axed. Sources told the outlet that a writers' room for the second season was never opened, and the show's writers have since been released to pursue other projects. This comes as a surprise given the series had a strong start — Wonder Man premiered on Disney+ on January 27th to high audience and critical acclaim, and was quickly renewed for a second season back in March.

Could We Still See These Characters in the MCU?

The cancellation may not be the end of the road for Wonder Man and his world. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation who spoke to Variety, while season two is not moving forward, the characters from the series could still appear in future Marvel projects — particularly Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, both of which feature a whopping 26 Marvel superheroes, with the full cast list still under wraps.

In its first season, Wonder Man followed struggling actor Simon Williams as he tried to get his career off the ground. After a chance meeting with veteran actor Trevor Slattery, Simon discovers that legendary director Von Kovak is remaking a fictional superhero film called Wonder Man. The story follows these two actors — at very different points in their careers — as they chase life-changing roles, offering audiences a peek behind the curtain of the entertainment industry.

The series stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in the title role, a performance that earned him an Emmy nomination for outstanding lead actor in a comedy series. The show also features Ben Kingsley reprising his role as Trevor Slattery from Iron Man 3, alongside Arian Moayed, X Mayo, Zlatko Burić, Olivia Thirlby, and Byron Bowers. No plot details for a potential second season had been announced prior to the cancellation.
