Something unusual is going on inside Islands of Adventure, and Universal Orlando Resort isn't saying much about it. Skull Island: Reign of Kong has been sitting closed for several weeks, with no announced reopening date and no official explanation from Universal about what's happening behind the scenes.
What makes the situation even more intriguing is an unconfirmed rumor circulating among Universal fans: that the enormous King Kong animatronic at the end of the ride allegedly caught fire while crews were performing repairs. Universal has not confirmed that incident, and no documentation has surfaced showing exactly what happened or how much damage — if any — the figure may have sustained. For now, that claim firmly belongs in rumor territory.
Still, the prolonged closure raises an obvious question: what does Universal do with Skull Island if the Kong figure requires significant work?
A Ride With a Complicated History
Skull Island: Reign of Kong opened at Islands of Adventure on July 13, 2016. The attraction sends guests aboard massive trackless expedition vehicles into the world of Skull Island, blending practical environments with large projection screens and animatronics.
That design has always made the ride somewhat divisive. The lengthy screen sequences haven't won over everyone — especially at a park filled with major physical attractions. The ride also originally included an outdoor portion, though Universal stopped regularly using that section years ago.
But there's one element that has always been hard to ignore: King Kong himself.
Guests encounter the massive Kong animatronic near the end of the experience. Universal previously described the figure as roughly three stories tall and 18 feet across at the shoulders, with a head larger than a car. That physical finale gives the attraction something its screen-heavy middle portion doesn't have — a towering character standing only feet away from guests.
Now, that very element may be the source of Universal's biggest headache.
An Extended Closure With No Answers
As of September 13, Skull Island: Reign of Kong had been persistently closed for several weeks. Universal had not announced a reopening date or publicly identified the reason for the downtime.
An unverified report circulating among Universal Orlando fans claims that crews were repairing the Kong animatronic when it allegedly caught fire. Similar claims appeared online afterward, but no identifiable source or supporting documentation has surfaced. Universal has not confirmed a fire, has not disclosed whether the animatronic suffered damage, and has not announced any plans to permanently close the attraction.
If the giant figure does require extensive repairs, though, Universal could face some significant decisions — and some of the possible paths forward would be far more controversial than others.
Option 1: Repair or Replace the Kong Animatronic
The least disruptive solution — and likely the one most fans would prefer — would be to repair the existing Kong animatronic or replace it with another physical version of the character.
That said, this wouldn't be a simple overnight fix. Kong's enormous size and mechanical complexity could make extensive repairs a significant undertaking, particularly if major internal components suffered damage. Still, preserving the animatronic would allow Universal to keep the attraction largely as guests know it. Given how much of Reign of Kong already relies on screens, maintaining that giant physical finale feels especially important to the overall experience.
Option 2: Swap Kong for Another Screen
Theoretically, Universal could remove the physical Kong figure and replace the finale with a projection-based scene. From an operational standpoint, that would eliminate the need to maintain such an enormous and complicated animatronic.
From a guest standpoint, however, it could be a very controversial move. Reign of Kong already relies heavily on screens — guests spend much of the main ride sequence surrounded by projected action before reaching the physical Kong figure. That animatronic is precisely what makes the ending feel different. Replacing it with another screen could make the attraction feel even more dependent on projection technology and would remove one of the most impressive physical elements in the entire ride.
Universal has not announced that it's considering this option. At this stage, it simply represents one possible path if the existing Kong figure can't easily return.
Option 3: Close Skull Island and Start Fresh
If Universal determines that major investment is required regardless, the company could eventually decide to replace Skull Island: Reign of Kong altogether. That would be the most dramatic — and most expensive — option on the table, but it could also generate plenty of excitement among Islands of Adventure fans.
Universal has dramatically changed its Orlando theme park lineup over the last several years, and replacing an attraction that opened in 2016 would give the company another opportunity to bring something entirely new to Islands of Adventure.
But it wouldn't be a simple project. Universal would need to invest in demolition, design, construction, ride systems, theming, and potentially an entirely different intellectual property — turning a repair problem into a major capital project. It also wouldn't provide an immediate solution to the current closure.
For those reasons, repairing Kong could remain the most practical outcome if the animatronic is indeed responsible for the extended downtime.
The Fate of King Kong Remains Unanswered
Right now, there are far more questions than answers. Universal Orlando has not announced plans to permanently close or replace Skull Island: Reign of Kong. It's entirely possible that crews repair the existing Kong figure, reopen the attraction, and this unusual closure eventually becomes little more than an extended period of downtime.
But the longer Reign of Kong stays dark, the more attention its future will attract. Universal could repair or replace the animatronic, take the controversial route of swapping Kong for another screen, or — if the problems prove extensive enough — decide that investing in an entirely new attraction makes more sense.
For fans, that last option might sound the most exciting. For Universal, it would almost certainly come with the largest bill and the longest timeline.
For now, Skull Island: Reign of Kong remains closed, no reopening date has been announced, and the reported incident involving its massive animatronic remains unconfirmed. Until Universal reveals what's really happening inside Skull Island, the fate of King Kong — and potentially the entire attraction built around him — remains one of the biggest unanswered questions at Islands of Adventure.
