Getting around Walt Disney World has always taken a little planning — but a wave of recent transportation changes means that planning is more important than ever. Buses, water taxis, FriendShip boats, and the Disney Skyliner have all seen notable developments over the past few months, and guests visiting through early 2027 will want to know what's different before they arrive.

Disney Springs Transportation Now Has New Restrictions

One of the biggest transportation shifts of 2026 affects guests trying to get from Disney Springs to a Disney Resort hotel. Beginning June 28, Walt Disney World began restricting access to resort buses and water taxis departing Disney Springs.

To use those transportation options, guests must now show that they are staying at a Disney Resorts Collection hotel or hold a qualifying reservation — such as a dining reservation or another eligible experience reservation at a resort. Cast Members can verify those reservations before allowing guests to board.

What does that mean in practice? The days of an off-site guest arriving at Disney Springs and hopping on a Disney bus or boat to explore a resort hotel — without a reservation — are largely over. That resort-hopping strategy has become significantly more difficult.

It's worth noting that Disney Springs does not offer direct buses or boats to the four theme parks. This restriction applies specifically to transportation heading from Disney Springs to Disney Resort hotels. Guests who are staying at a Disney Resort hotel can continue using the service as before.

Boat Transportation Has Seen Multiple Interruptions

The new Disney Springs rules aren't the only water transportation news. Several boat routes have faced temporary disruptions due to maintenance and refurbishment work this summer.

Yacht and Beach Club Dock Has Reopened

Guests staying in the EPCOT resort area recently dealt with the closure of the FriendShip boat dock shared by Disney's Yacht Club Resort and Disney's Beach Club Resort. That dock experienced maintenance closures that extended through late August — temporarily removing a popular transportation option for guests in that part of the resort.

The good news: that closure has ended. The Yacht and Beach Club boat dock has reopened, restoring FriendShip boat service from those resorts. For guests staying nearby, FriendShip boats offer a relaxing alternative to buses when heading toward EPCOT and Disney's Hollywood Studios.

Sassagoula River Cruise Still Affected

Guests staying around the Disney Springs resort area have faced a larger water transportation interruption this summer. Refurbishment work along the Sassagoula River Cruise route has temporarily suspended water taxi service for several nearby resorts, including Disney's Port Orleans Resort and Disney's Old Key West Resort.

Normally, the Sassagoula River Cruise provides a scenic, relaxing alternative to buses between Disney Springs and those hotels. During the refurbishment, affected guests have needed to rely on Walt Disney World bus transportation instead.

The project is expected to wrap up very soon — with August coming to a close, the Sassagoula River Cruise could return any day. That said, guests shouldn't assume boats are running until Disney officially restores service. For now, buses remain the safer plan.

Disney Skyliner Guests Recently Faced Major Delays

Since opening in 2019, the Disney Skyliner has become one of Walt Disney World's most beloved transportation systems. The gondola network connects Disney's Hollywood Studios and EPCOT's International Gateway with Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort, Disney's Riviera Resort, Disney's Pop Century Resort, and Disney's Art of Animation Resort — giving guests at those hotels a convenient, bus-free way to reach two of the four theme parks.

Earlier this month, however, the Skyliner ran into trouble. An issue involving the loading process resulted in significant delays and long lines, with the disruption stretching on for hours. Disney dispatched backup buses to help move resort guests who would otherwise have relied on the gondolas — turning what's usually a smooth ride into a much longer wait for those caught in the situation.

Disney Files New Construction Permit for Hollywood Studios Skyliner Station

On the heels of those delays, Disney has filed a new construction permit connected to the Skyliner station outside Disney's Hollywood Studios. The permit calls for labor, materials, and electrical work at the station.

The filing doesn't reveal exactly what Disney plans to change — the work could involve routine maintenance, electrical upgrades, repairs, or other improvements. There is also no confirmation that the permit is related to the loading problems guests experienced earlier this month.

Still, the timing is notable, especially given that a much larger Skyliner shutdown is already on the calendar.

The Entire Disney Skyliner Will Close for One Week in January 2027

Walt Disney World has already confirmed a system-wide Disney Skyliner refurbishment. The entire Skyliner network will close from January 24 through January 30, 2027.

During that week, guests staying at resorts normally served by the gondola system — Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort, Disney's Riviera Resort, Disney's Pop Century Resort, and Disney's Art of Animation Resort — will need to use alternative transportation. Disney will provide complimentary bus service while the Skyliner is unavailable.

Easy Skyliner access is one of the biggest perks of staying at those hotels, so guests planning a trip during those dates should factor the closure into their transportation expectations. Travel patterns heading toward EPCOT and Disney's Hollywood Studios will look quite different that week.

Disney has not confirmed any connection between the newly filed Hollywood Studios construction permit and January's scheduled closure, though the permit could potentially be related to preparations for that work.

A Busy Stretch for Walt Disney World Transportation

Taken one at a time, none of these changes completely overhauls how guests get around Walt Disney World. Buses, boats, and the Skyliner all remain central parts of the resort's transportation network. But together, they paint a picture of a system going through a notably active period.

  • Disney Springs now has stricter rules about who can use resort buses and water taxis — guests without a Disney Resort stay or qualifying reservation can no longer freely use Disney Springs as a resort-hopping launch pad.
  • The Yacht and Beach Club FriendShip dock has reopened after maintenance, while the Sassagoula River Cruise remains affected by refurbishment work.
  • The Disney Skyliner recently experienced multi-hour delays requiring backup buses, a new construction permit has been filed for the Hollywood Studios station, and a full system-wide closure is confirmed for January 24–30, 2027.

The biggest takeaway for guests? Having a backup transportation plan is becoming increasingly important. Disney buses continue to fill that role whenever boats or the Skyliner are unavailable — and that will certainly be the case during January's Skyliner refurbishment.

Anyone visiting Walt Disney World through the remainder of 2026 or into early 2027 would be wise to check the latest transportation information before heading out. A route that worked perfectly on a previous trip might look a little different the next time you arrive.
