Universal Studios Florida has seen a tremendous amount of change over the years, but one attraction managed to outlast nearly every transformation the park threw at it — until this spring.
Universal Orlando's Horror Make-Up Show, a live-performance experience that dates all the way back to the park's opening in 1990, gave its final performance in its original form on May 11, 2026. The theater went dark the very next day, leaving an opening-day attraction unavailable for the first time in years. Nearly four months later, guests are still waiting for its return.
A Show With Deep Roots
The Horror Make-Up Show built its identity not on elaborate ride technology, but on live performers, comedy, audience participation, and demonstrations showing how Hollywood creates some of its most memorable horror effects. That formula helped it survive decade after decade while entire sections of Universal Studios Florida changed around it — attractions came and went, intellectual properties shifted, and the entertainment lineup was repeatedly refreshed. The Horror Make-Up Show remained.
That changed this spring when Universal temporarily pulled the attraction from operation to move forward with a significant reimagining. Crucially, Universal confirmed this was not a permanent closure — the plan is to bring the experience back in an updated form later in 2026.
September Arrives Without a Reopening Date
When the closure was announced in May, a return later in 2026 left plenty of possibilities open. One of the most natural fits seemed to be Halloween Horror Nights. The show's focus on horror movies, practical effects, monsters, and filmmaking made it feel like an ideal entertainment option during Universal's biggest Halloween event.
That hasn't happened. Halloween Horror Nights 35 kicked off on August 28, and as September progresses, the Horror Make-Up Show remains unavailable. Universal has not announced an official reopening date.
It's worth noting that Halloween Horror Nights 35 runs through November 1, so Universal technically still has several weeks to debut the updated show during the Halloween season. However, the longer September goes without an announcement, the less likely an imminent reopening feels. Until Universal narrows that window, anything more specific would be speculation.
Guests should not plan their Halloween Horror Nights visit expecting the show to suddenly become available. Until Universal provides a date, the theater remains closed.
One Visible Change: A New Marquee
There has been at least one noticeable update outside the attraction. The marquee has recently been changed to display a
