If you've been keeping up with Epic Universe news, you may have heard that Universal recently made some notable changes to which attractions and lands are available during Early Park Admission (EPA) — the one-hour window when Universal hotel guests can ride before the park officially opens to everyone. Those changes mean the old morning strategy is out, and a new one is very much in order.
What Changed with Early Park Admission?
Previously, Super Nintendo World, Celestial Park, and Dark Universe attractions were all open for EPA. And while Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry was not included, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Ministry of Magic portal was open during that window. That meant guests could line up at the portal and often board the ride about half an hour before official park opening.
Now, things look quite different. According to Universal Orlando's website, from June 1st through July 31st, 2026, "select participating attractions" in Ministry of Magic, How to Train Your Dragon — Isle of Berk, Celestial Park, and Super Nintendo World will all be open for EPA. That covers most of the available attractions in the park.
New Strategy for Hotel Guests (with EPA)
Since Battle at the Ministry is now open during EPA, it should be your first stop if you're a hotel guest — it consistently draws the longest lines in the park, so tackling it early is a high priority. Other strong choices during that EPA window include Mine-Cart Madness or Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge.
However, if you've purchased an Express Pass and can skip the line on those popular rides, consider heading to Isle of Berk for EPA instead. There you can meet Toothless — a meet-and-greet that draws a very long line — or hop on Dragon Racer's Rally, the only ride in the park that does not offer Express Pass access.
New Strategy for Non-Hotel Guests (No EPA)
If you're not staying at a Universal Orlando hotel and don't have EPA access, you have a couple of solid options for making the most of those first minutes when the park opens to regular guests.
- Head for Stardust Racers. This ride is open during EPA, but it's not the most popular choice among hotel guests. That means it's likely to have very short waits for the first 20 or so minutes after the park opens to the general public — before the hotel crowd makes its way in that direction.
- Make a beeline for Curse of the Werewolf. Dark Universe is not open during EPA, so when the park opens to everyone, you could hustle over there and potentially ride it as a walk-on. It can build a hefty wait as the day goes on, and the queue isn't particularly exciting. Worth noting: the Single Rider queue there is not effective for cutting down your wait.
As a non-hotel guest, you could also head into any of the portals that were already open during EPA — just know you'll be sharing that space with the wave of hotel guests and may see a spike in wait times as a result.
A Note on Rope-Dropping Battle at the Ministry
One reader, Stacy, asked about rope-dropping Battle at the Ministry for an August visit without Express Pass, noting she'd heard the ride can struggle first thing in the morning. The response from the author is worth keeping in mind:
"Instead of rope-dropping Battle at the Ministry at 9:00 AM, I usually head over to Isle of Berk or Dark Universe to knock out other high-demand attractions and get those out of the way first while everyone else is waiting for Battle at the Ministry. Let the crowds burn their morning energy waiting for the Ministry to warm up, and then head into the queue around mid-afternoon. You'll get to enjoy a fully functional queue (because things tend to break down a lot first thing in the morning due to all the technology), the complete Floo Powder experience (so fun!), and a much needed break in the A/C when the Florida heat is at its worst, especially in August."
The author does note that rope-dropping Battle at the Ministry during EPA can work — but only if you can check all three of these boxes:
- You have Early Park Admission.
- You are at the absolute front of the resort guest crowd at the park turnstiles.
- The ride is confirmed open and running the moment you walk through the portal.
There's also an important trade-off to be aware of: during the EPA window, before official park hours, the Floo Powder teleportation effect will not be active. If you're a casual fan who just wants to experience the ride system without the wait, that trade-off may be worth it. If you're a die-hard Harry Potter fan who wants the full experience of "entering" the Ministry of Magic the way it was designed, you won't get that during EPA.
If you do decide to go for it, don't just run blindly toward the portal. Keep your eyes on the Universal Orlando App the moment you clear security. If it shows a wait time — say, 15 to 30 minutes — the ride has cycled successfully and is accepting guests, so go for it. If it shows "Delayed" or "Temporarily Closed," pivot immediately to your backup plan and work your way back to it later.
Make the Most of Your Morning
Whether you're a hotel guest with EPA or a day-tripper working with the general opening, having a clear plan for those first hours at Epic Universe can make a real difference in how much you get done — and how much you enjoy the experience. Know your priorities, watch the app, and be ready to adapt!
