Great news for Frontierland fans! As of Tuesday, September 15, the Mark Twain Riverboat has returned to the Rivers of America at Disneyland Park. The historic steamboat had been docked for several days, leaving guests without the chance to cruise around Tom Sawyer Island — one of those classic Disneyland experiences that never gets old.

A Brief But Noticeable Closure

Back in early August, Disneyland Resort announced that the Mark Twain Riverboat would close for refurbishment beginning September 8, 2026, with an original target reopening date of September 12. The closure ran a few days longer than initially planned, but the wait is now over.

As is typical with maintenance-focused refurbishments, Disneyland did not share any details about what work was being done during the closure — and that's pretty standard for this type of downtime at the park.

Back on the Water

On Tuesday, WDW News Today shared a photo on Facebook showing guests once again riding the refurbished steamboat along the Rivers of America. The Mark Twain Riverboat is currently operating from 9:00 a.m. to 5:40 p.m.

Upon its return, no visible changes were noted to the attraction. It appears that no major updates were made to the steamboat itself or its loading dock — just a good, thorough maintenance refresh to keep this Disneyland classic sailing smoothly.

Tom Sawyer Island Still Closed

While the riverboat is back in action, guests should note that Pirate's Lair on Tom Sawyer Island and its raft transportation remain closed for their own refurbishment. That closure began this week, with an expected reopening of September 17. However, the Disneyland Resort website advises guests to check back for updates, as that timeline could shift as the project progresses.

A Reminder of What's Been Lost at Walt Disney World

For those who may be visiting Disneyland specifically to experience this type of attraction, it's worth noting that Walt Disney World Resort permanently closed its own version of the Rivers of America — including the Liberty Square Riverboat and Tom Sawyer Island — in 2025. That makes Disneyland's Rivers of America the only place in an American Disney park where guests can still enjoy a ride aboard a historic steamboat.

Whether you're a longtime fan of the Mark Twain Riverboat or planning your first voyage around the Rivers of America, now is a great time to add it to your Disneyland itinerary!
