Construction activity around the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at Disney's Hollywood Studios is growing. Less than a week after scaffolding was first spotted on the far right side of the Hollywood Tower Hotel facade, even more construction equipment has appeared — this time above the attraction's gift shop, Tower Hotel Gifts.

A Refurbishment That's Been Building for Months

This project didn't appear out of nowhere. Back in May, Walt Disney World Resort refurbished elements of the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror queue. Shortly after, some decorative flags came down from the exit of Tower Hotel Gifts, and scrim began blocking portions of the facade near the gift shop. The signs of work have been quietly accumulating ever since.

In March, Walt Disney World Resort filed a permit for "general construction" on the attraction. The permit was filed by the resort's Facility Asset Management Teams — a detail worth noting, as filings from this team typically indicate a refurbishment rather than a more significant update or retheme.

What's Happening Right Now

As of July 7, additional scaffolding has been installed in the top center of the Hollywood Tower Hotel facade, directly above Tower Hotel Gifts. Despite the growing presence of metal construction equipment, no active construction work has been observed in the area. The attraction itself continues to operate normally, welcoming guests for its signature drop experience.

Walt Disney World Resort has not made any public comment about the construction equipment or what the refurbishment entails.

What Does It All Mean?

For now, the details remain a mystery. The combination of queue refurbishments, removed flags, scrim, scaffolding, and a general construction permit all point to ongoing work on the beloved Hollywood Tower Hotel — but the scope and purpose of that work have yet to be revealed by the resort.

In the meantime, the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror remains open, so guests visiting Walt Disney World Resort can still take the plunge into the Twilight Zone while the work continues outside.
