This summer, friendship takes center stage at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort with the debut of "Pixar Pals Spectacular," an all-new nighttime show that transforms the Castle of Magical Dreams and Main Street, U.S.A. into a breathtaking celebration of Pixar Animation Studios' most beloved stories — and it's an experience you can only find at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort.
Combining dazzling drones, immersive projection mapping, giant inflatables, fountains, lasers, lighting effects, and music, "Pixar Pals Spectacular" is making its debut as the centerpiece of the resort's first-ever Pixar Summer Fest.
A Celebration of Friendship Across Generations
At its heart, "Pixar Pals Spectacular" is built around a theme that connects people of all ages and backgrounds: friendship. From the very first moments, guests are swept into a world where Pixar's most iconic friendships unfold across the night sky.
The journey begins with the beloved Pixar Lamp and Ball appearing above the park through synchronized drone choreography, before moving through unforgettable stories featuring:
- Woody and Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story
- Mike and Sulley from Monsters, Inc.
- Lightning McQueen and Mater from Cars
- Carl and Russell from Up
- Marlin and Dory from Finding Nemo
- Characters from WALL·E, Inside Out, Turning Red, and more
Show Director Matt Coombes explained the thinking behind the show's emotional core:
"Friendship is a theme that runs throughout all our lives, from our very earliest memories through our formative years into adulthood, where our friends shape who we are. We had a lot of fun discussing the friendships from the Pixar canon that would resonate the most with our guests, as well as those moments which had the most emotional weight."
An Expansive Canvas Stretching Beyond the Castle
One of the most remarkable things about "Pixar Pals Spectacular" is its sheer scale. Rather than focusing solely on the castle, the creative team transformed both the Castle of Magical Dreams and the entirety of Main Street, U.S.A. into one expansive storytelling canvas.
Throughout the show, guests can watch as doors from Monsters, Inc. swing open across building facades, waves from Finding Nemo ripple through the park, the colorful world of Up fills the sky, and the high-energy excitement of Cars races down the street.
"We leaned into the art of Pixar as our inspiration to allow us to transform the architecture in a fun and surprising way. The credit sequences of many Pixar films provided fantastic artistic inspiration for these projections and animations." — Matt Coombes, Show Director
Technology in Service of Story
Behind the magic is a seamless blend of creative and technical artistry. Producer Laetitia Lee describes the production process as building a shared visual language across every storytelling medium.
"The show began as a unified story — defining mood, scale, and emotional flow before any technology was selected. The focus was on layering imagery, movement, and rhythm into one cohesive canvas, ensuring every discipline contributes to a single, immersive experience."
One standout moment arrives during The Incredibles sequence, where projections, drones, lasers, lighting effects, and fountain projections all work in concert to place guests right in the middle of the action. Above, the night sky becomes its own stage, with larger-than-life drone formations inspired by the Pixar Lamp and Ball, the balloon house from Up, and memory-inspired imagery from Inside Out.
Stories That Speak to Everyone
Creative Director Christie Evangelisto spoke to what makes Pixar storytelling so enduring — and why it was the perfect foundation for this show:
"What makes Pixar storytelling so timeless is that it always speaks directly to the human experience. No matter your age, culture, or background, you see your own self reflected in their stories and characters."
That philosophy is woven throughout "Pixar Pals Spectacular," which brings together classics like Finding Nemo and Monsters, Inc. alongside newer stories such as Turning Red and Inside Out. Notably, characters from Toy Story 5 — currently in theaters — can also be seen in the show.
"The most rewarding part has been bridging generations. Seeing characters from Toy Story or Up coexist seamlessly with Turning Red and Inside Out creates a shared emotional experience across ages." — Laetitia Lee, Producer
A Grand Finale to Remember
As the show builds to its grand finale, Pixar friendships from every era come together in a spectacular crescendo of lights, music, projections, drones, fountains, and surprise character inflatables stretching the full length of Main Street, U.S.A.
As Matt Coombes put it: "We hope for guests to see themselves in the stories playing on the castle and along Main Street, U.S.A. We hope they can find connection and representation in the incredible volume of stories and characters featured in the show."
"Pixar Pals Spectacular" is running now through August 31, 2026, as part of Pixar Summer Fest at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort. Don't miss it!
