Marvel Studios has officially begun assembling its new team of mutants, with several major characters now cast for the upcoming MCU X-Men reboot. Here's everything we know so far about who's joining the new roster — and who's stepping into Wolverine's iconic claws.
The New X-Men Cast So Far
The first big reveal came this summer, when Stranger Things star Sadie Sink was confirmed as Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026), following months of speculation. Her appearance has officially marked the beginning of the MCU's new X-Men era.
Shortly after, Marvel confirmed two more additions: Samara Weaving (Ready or Not) as Emma Frost, and Kit Connor (Heartstopper) as Scott Summers/Cyclops.
Then, at D23, the studio unveiled four more cast members for the X-Men reboot:
- Christopher Abbott (Girls) as Professor Charles Xavier/Professor X
- Inde Navarrette (Obsession) as Rogue
- Maya Boyd (& Juliet) as Ororo Munroe/Storm
- Adam Driver (The Force Awakens) as Nathaniel Milbury/Mr. Sinister
Whether any of these newly cast mutants will appear in Avengers: Doomsday (2026) remains to be seen. And one major question still lingers: who will play Wolverine in the theatrical reboot?
Hugh Jackman's Legacy as Wolverine
Hugh Jackman first donned the adamantium claws in the year 2000's X-Men and reprised the role numerous times throughout the long-running Fox film series and the Wolverine solo trilogy. Most recently, he returned alongside Ryan Reynolds' Wade Wilson/Deadpool in Deadpool & Wolverine (2024).
Jackman has told Project Big Screen that he'd be willing to play Wolverine for as long as Marvel allows it, and he recently teased a possible appearance in Doomsday alongside Reynolds. Still, his long-term future in the MCU remains uncertain, and fans are waiting to find out who will officially take over the role in the new X-Men film.
Meet the New Wolverine — At Least for Now
While the theatrical casting remains unannounced, the character has been recast for the upcoming video game Marvel's Wolverine. Australian actor Liam McIntyre (Gears of War) provides the voice, likeness, and motion capture for Wolverine in the game — following in the footsteps of fellow Australian Hugh Jackman.
Developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, Marvel's Wolverine is described as a brutal third-person action-adventure. The official synopsis sets the stage: "As he searches for answers about his past, Wolverine will do whatever it takes, unleashing brutal claw combat, violent rage, and relentless determination, to cut through the mystery of the man he used to be."
"A Huge Responsibility"
With the game nearing its release, McIntyre has been opening up about landing the role. In an interview with Back Pocket, he shared the story of his unlikely audition:
"For me, I've liked Wolverine since I was a kid, like, 13, something like that, I was watching the animated series. And then one day, many decades later, I get a call that I'll have an audition the day I land in LA. The plane's late, I miss the audition. They had another day the next day, they were like, 'Look, we'll just put you on the end of that.' I remember doing it, and I was walking out, I was like, 'And I'm also Australian if that's a thing you need!'"
McIntyre added: "I still don't know what mad luck happened to get that role, but now it's a huge responsibility that I have to not screw up."
Until Marvel Studios announces a theatrical Wolverine for the X-Men reboot, Liam McIntyre is the new face — and claws — of the beloved mutant.
Meanwhile, Fox-Era Mutants Return in Avengers: Doomsday
While we wait to see the new X-Men cast on the big screen, Avengers: Doomsday is bringing back a number of beloved mutants from the Fox film era, including:
- Ian McKellen as Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto
- Alan Cumming as Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler
- Rebecca Romijn as Raven Darkhölme/Mystique
- James Marsden as Scott Summers/Cyclops
- Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier/Professor X (who also appeared in 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness)
- Kelsey Grammer as Hank McCoy/Beast (who had a cameo at the end of 2023's The Marvels)
- Channing Tatum as Remy LeBeau/Gambit, reprising his debut from Deadpool & Wolverine
Avengers: Doomsday releases on December 18. Marvel's Wolverine releases on September 15.
