On October 1, 2026, Magic Kingdom marked 55 years of operation with a morning ceremony at Cinderella Castle, a message pushed directly to guests' phones through the My Disney Experience app, and a new collection of commemorative merchandise.
A Park Built on Walt's Florida Dream
The story of Magic Kingdom stretches back to 1965, when Walt Disney announced his plans for Florida after quietly acquiring more than 27,000 acres of land near Orlando through shell companies. Walt passed away in 1966 before the Florida Project was complete, and it fell to his brother, Roy O. Disney, to see it through. Magic Kingdom opened on October 1, 1971, alongside hotels including Disney's Contemporary Resort and Disney's Polynesian Resort — two properties that still welcome guests to this day.
The Castle Address
Joe Schott, President of Walt Disney World, took the stage at Cinderella Castle at 8:50 a.m. to deliver an address honoring five and a half decades of memories and looking ahead to the park's future. Because the ceremony took place just before the usual morning opening, the best views went to guests who had arrived during Early Theme Park Entry and staked out spots along Main Street, U.S.A. No announcements had been confirmed beforehand.
A Message in Every Pocket
Resort guests also received a push notification through the My Disney Experience app carrying a personal message from Schott:
"Happy Anniversary, Walt Disney World! Today, we celebrate 55 years of The Most Magical Place on Earth. Thank you for including Walt Disney World in your lives. Here's to the memories we've made together and all that's still to come. Wherever your journey takes you today, make it a magical one!" – Joe Schott, President, Walt Disney World.
An Early Rush, Then Quiet Walkways
After the morning crowd cleared, Magic Kingdom reportedly turned into something of a ghost town as guests moved on to other parks. Many fans had likely already picked up the anniversary merchandise they were after. October 1 was also a Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party night, meaning the park closed to day guests at 6 p.m.
The Merchandise
The 55th anniversary collection featured two opening-day cast members as its models — a fitting tribute to Disney's long-held description of cast members as the heart of the guest experience.
How the 55th Compared to the 50th
The 50th anniversary, "The World's Most Magical Celebration," launched on October 1, 2021, and ran for 18 months, bringing EARidescent castle décor, new nighttime spectaculars, and a wave of merchandise. The 55th was a smaller affair, but it arrived amid far greater physical change at the park.
In July 2025, Disney permanently closed the Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat to make way for Piston Peak National Park, a Cars-themed land with a rugged national park setting. Construction walls now hide much of the former waterway, making this the first major milestone Magic Kingdom has celebrated without that opening-day feature.
Disney has also outlined plans for Villains Land beyond Frontierland — the first land of its kind at a Disney park. These projects follow several recent changes: Tiana's Bayou Adventure replaced Splash Mountain in 2024, Country Bear Musical Jamboree debuted that same year, and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad returned this year from an extended refurbishment.
