Luke Skywalker is returning to Disney+ this September — but not quite the way Star Wars fans might expect. Nearly five decades after Mark Hamill first brought the legendary Jedi to life in Star Wars (1977), Lucasfilm is revisiting one of the character's most memorable modern moments with a new performer behind the role.

\nLucasfilm is bringing Luke back in LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian, an animated Disney+ special set to begin streaming on September 2. Rather than telling a brand-new story, the special revisits memorable events from The Mandalorian — including one of the show's biggest surprises: Luke's dramatic arrival during the Season 2 finale.
\nDisney's trailer saves Luke for the very end. Dressed in black and wielding his green lightsaber, the Jedi fights his way through Dark Troopers in a LEGO recreation of the sequence that stunned viewers back in 2020. There's one major difference, though: Mark Hamill isn't voicing Luke in this version.
\n\nMark Hamill Has Been Replaced — For This Project
\nLet's be clear about what this means and what it doesn't. Lucasfilm has not announced that Hamill has permanently lost the role of Luke Skywalker across the Star Wars franchise. Other actors have voiced the character in animated projects and video games before. This recasting applies specifically to LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian.
\nThat said, it's still a notable development. Hamill's connection to Luke stretches back 49 years, and as recently as 2024, Lucasfilm brought him back to voice LEGO Luke in LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy. He also remained involved when Luke appeared in the live-action version of the very scene this special recreates — with Lucasfilm using visual effects and a body double to present a younger version of the character in The Mandalorian.
\nFor LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian, Lucasfilm has gone a different direction. Eric Bauza will officially voice Luke Skywalker in the new special. It doesn't erase Hamill's 49-year history with the character or establish a permanent successor — but when Luke ignites his green lightsaber on Disney+ on September 2, it will be Bauza's voice fans hear.

\nLuke's inclusion in the special makes a lot of sense given what it's trying to accomplish. His original appearance in The Mandalorian came at a critical moment: Din Djarin and his allies were trapped aboard Moff Gideon's ship, facing Dark Troopers they weren't prepared to overcome. Then an X-wing arrived.
\nLuke tore through the Dark Troopers before revealing himself to Din, Grogu, and the others. He had sensed Grogu's earlier call through the Force and came to take him for Jedi training. The LEGO version follows the same basic sequence — but adds some comedy along the way.
