Fresh casting news has arrived for HBO's upcoming Harry Potter reboot, and three pivotal Chamber of Secrets roles are now officially filled.

Before we get to the new additions, here's a quick refresher on where the series stands. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is set to debut on HBO in December, kicking off what is planned as a seven-season retelling of J.K. Rowling's wizarding world. The show is already in production on Season 2, and its core cast includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Alastair Stout as Ron, and Arabella Stanton as Hermione, with John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Snape, Janet McTeer as McGonagall, and Nick Frost as Hagrid.

Three New Faces Join the Wizarding World

HBO has now confirmed the casting of three characters who are central to the Chamber of Secrets story. Lenny Rush will voice Dobby, Bonnie Hill will play Ginny Weasley, and Billy Barratt steps into the role of teenage Tom Riddle. In the original film adaptation, those roles were played by Toby Jones, Bonnie Wright, and Christian Coulson, respectively.

Each character carries significant weight in the second story. Dobby spends much of the tale attempting to keep Harry away from Hogwarts, Ginny becomes central to the mystery unfolding within the school, and Riddle's enchanted diary ultimately holds the key to the Chamber of Secrets itself.

Who Are the New Cast Members?

Rush is already a recognisable face, with credits including Doctor Who, Enola Holmes 2, and Am I Being Unreasonable? — the latter earning him a BAFTA in 2023. Hill's work includes Film Club, The Six Triple Eight, and the children's series Girl Troop versus Aliens.

Barratt brings an impressive résumé to the role of young Voldemort, having won an International Emmy for Responsible Child and gone on to appear in Invasion, Kraven the Hunter, Crater, and Bring Her Back. His casting also puts to rest speculation that Adolescence star Owen Cooper might take on the role of Riddle — though that rumour was never substantiated by HBO.

One Big Voldemort Question Remains

While Barratt will portray Riddle in his teenage years, HBO has yet to announce who will play the fully-fledged Dark Lord in the series. Names that have been linked to the role include Paul Bettany, Tom Hiddleston, and Ralph Fiennes himself — though Fiennes has revealed that he turned down a return to the franchise.

A Series Not Without Controversy

The reboot has faced its share of challenges beyond casting. Rowling's continued involvement as an executive producer has attracted backlash over her views on transgender issues, and original Harry Potter director Chris Columbus is among those who have questioned the need to retell a story whose film adaptation concluded only 15 years ago. The cast has also seen some movement — Gracie Cochrane, who plays Ginny Weasley in Season 1, stepped away from the production citing "unforeseen circumstances," with some fans anticipating further changes down the line.
