It's not every day you hear a Walt Disney World Resort guest express gratitude for being turned away from a ride — especially after waiting in line for hours. But that's exactly what happened with one woman, whose experience at Avatar Flight of Passage at Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park became the unexpected spark for a remarkable health journey.

About Avatar Flight of Passage

Avatar Flight of Passage is a flight simulator attraction located in Pandora – The World of Avatar at Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park. Guests sit on the ride's seats much like they would on a bicycle, leaning forward toward the handlebars while restraints lock onto their backs and lower legs.

As one of the most technically advanced attractions at Walt Disney World Resort, it is also well known for turning guests away. The leg restraints can be particularly challenging for taller or more muscular guests, while the back restraints won't lock for some guests who carry their weight in their abdomen.

Following guest complaints after the attraction debuted in 2017, Walt Disney World Resort eventually added a test seat outside Avatar Flight of Passage. Guests who are concerned about the restraints can test the seat beforehand, and if the safety light turns green, a Disney cast member can confirm they're cleared to ride — saving guests from waiting two to four hours only to be turned away.

A Humbling Moment That Changed Everything

Three years ago, one guest — who either visited before the test seat was installed or didn't use it — was turned away from Avatar Flight of Passage, leaving her son to ride alone. Rather than letting the moment overshadow her vacation, she chose to let it motivate her.

Instagram user Michelle Peterson (@3princeandaprincess) recently shared a video thanking Walt Disney World Resort for that very experience, which ultimately inspired a weight-loss journey.

In her post, Peterson wrote alongside photos from throughout her health journey:
