Frontierland at Magic Kingdom Park is looking a little smaller these days. As Walt Disney World Resort pushes forward with construction of the Cars (2009)-themed Piston Peak National Park — set to rise on the former site of the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island — construction walls are steadily claiming more of the beloved Wild West-inspired land.
Piston Peak National Park Is Coming to Magic Kingdom
The big announcement came at D23 Expo 2024, when Walt Disney World Resort revealed two exciting new additions headed to Magic Kingdom Park: a Disney Villains land situated "beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad" and Piston Peak National Park in Frontierland. Making way for Piston Peak required the 2025 closure of the Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat.
Inspired by the natural landscapes of national parks across the United States and the world of Cars, Piston Peak National Park will feature two brand-new attractions. At D23 Expo 2026, Walt Disney Imagineering revealed their names: Cars Ridge Run Rally and Miss Fritter's Daredevil Spin-Along. The latter will also introduce a new character — Ranger J. Autobahn Woodlore — brought to life as an audio-animatronic park ranger.
Walt Disney World Resort has not yet announced a grand-opening date for Piston Peak National Park. Construction has ramped up considerably in recent months, and the Westward Ho Refreshments and Big Al's kiosks have both closed to make way for the new land.
The Frontierland Boardwalk Is Now Fully Closed
On September 2, WDWNT reported that the entire boardwalk in Frontierland at Magic Kingdom Park is now closed off. Half of the wooden walkway had already been blocked since early July, but construction walls have now sealed off the complete path.
These walls run along the former Rivers of America, stretching from Liberty Square all the way to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad on the far side of Frontierland. They're dressed up with signs featuring logos and slogans for nearby attractions — including the classic Big Thunder Mountain Railroad tagline, "This Here's The Wildest Ride In The Wilderness!"
Despite the current closure, the boardwalk is expected to be incorporated into Piston Peak National Park once the new area opens. When exactly guests will be able to walk that path again, however, remains unclear.
