Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground is getting a significant refresh — and the timing couldn't be more fitting. As the resort approaches its 55th birthday, Disney has unveiled the latest stage of an ongoing transformation at one of Walt Disney World's most beloved and storied properties.
A Resort Rooted in History
Fort Wilderness opened in November 1971, just over a month after Magic Kingdom, making it one of Walt Disney World's original hotels. Spanning around 750 acres of pine and cypress forest along Bay Lake, the resort has long offered guests a one-of-a-kind escape into nature, complete with campsites, cabins, trails, horseback riding, archery, and water recreation.
Over the decades, Fort Wilderness has evolved while holding onto its rustic charm. Most recently, Disney replaced its longtime cabins with Disney Vacation Club accommodations inspired by the resort's woodland setting. Now, the latest wave of updates is focused on guest spaces throughout the property.
A Bigger, Better Meadow Swimmin' Pool Area
One of the most exciting additions centers on the Meadow Swimmin' Pool. Disney has added a brand-new zero-entry pool alongside the existing one, and with expanded deck space included, the project roughly doubles the amount of room available for guests to swim, relax, and enjoy the Florida sunshine.
The original Meadow Swimmin' Pool remains open — including its popular 67-foot corkscrew waterslide. Disney has also added a nostalgic touch to the area: an old-fashioned barrel carriage featuring Mickey Mouse in camping gear, serving as a tribute to the long-closed River Country water park that once operated next door.
A Warmer Welcome at the Reception Outpost
Guests arriving at Fort Wilderness will also notice a refreshed Reception Outpost, redesigned to create a more welcoming arrival experience. The updated lobby gives cast members additional space to assist guests checking into campsites and cabins, and introduces new artwork inspired by the resort's outdoorsy spirit.
Above the fireplace, Mickey Mouse and friends are depicted enjoying the waterfront. Elsewhere in the space, Huey, Dewey, and Louie appear in three playful scenes celebrating activities guests can experience during their stay — including fishing, archery, and camping beneath the pines.
Part of a Broader Wave of Resort Investment
The Fort Wilderness updates are part of a larger push to refresh Walt Disney World's hotel offerings. Disney's Contemporary Resort is in the midst of a multi-year refurbishment across the Main Tower and Bay Lake Tower, with work continuing through 2027. Disney's Port Orleans Resort – Riverside is also receiving a phased refurbishment of its guest rooms.
At the deluxe resort level, Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge is refreshing rooms at Jambo House, while exterior refurbishment remains underway at Disney's Wilderness Lodge and Copper Creek Villas & Cabins.
A Note on Resort Transportation Changes
These resort updates come alongside some notable policy changes. Since June, guests boarding buses or boats from Disney Springs to Disney Resort hotels must show proof of a hotel stay or a dining or recreation reservation — closing a long-used transportation loophole. Guests have also reported restrictions on the walkway between Disney's Polynesian Village Resort and the Transportation and Ticket Center.
Whether you're a longtime Fort Wilderness fan or planning your first stay, there's never been a better time to explore everything this classic resort has to offer. What do you think of the latest changes at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground?
