It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that Sam Neill, the actor best known for bringing the endearing paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant to life in the Jurassic Park films, has passed away suddenly at the age of 78. His family confirmed the news on Monday, July 13.

Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life. The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free. A Battle Won, A Loss Still Felt
In 2022, Neill had been diagnosed with stage three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. After a long course of treatment, he had declared himself cancer-free earlier this year — a fact his family confirmed in their statement, noting that he remained completely cancer-free at the time of his passing.
An Illustrious Career on Screen
Born in Northern Ireland to an English mother and a New Zealand father, Sam Neill built a remarkable career across both film and television. His filmography spans decades and genres, including Sleeping Dogs (1977), My Brilliant Career (1979), Omen III: The Final Conflict (1981), Dead Calm (1989), Death in Brunswick (1990), The Hunt for Red October (1990), The Piano (1993), In the Mouth of Madness (1994), Event Horizon (1997), and The Hunter (2011).
On the small screen, Neill appeared in a wide range of television projects, including The Tudors (2007), Crusoe (2008–2010), Happy Town (2010), Alcatraz (2012), and the first two seasons of the hit series Peaky Blinders (2013–2014).

Of all his memorable performances, it was his portrayal of Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg's sci-fi blockbuster Jurassic Park (1993) that truly made Sam Neill a household name.
