One of EPCOT's most elaborate rooftops is disappearing piece by piece — and if you're heading to the Germany Pavilion soon, you'll definitely notice.

World Showcase has always leaned on architecture just as much as its attractions. Its 11 country pavilions encircle a 1.3-mile promenade, using restaurants, shops, entertainment, and carefully recreated landmarks to whisk guests around the world without ever leaving Walt Disney World. Germany has been part of that lineup since EPCOT opened on October 1, 1982, drawing inspiration largely from the walled Bavarian town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber and weaving together buildings and details from several German regions and periods.

Now, one of the pavilion's most prominent structures is in the middle of a substantial exterior refurbishment.

Das Kaufhaus Is Getting a New Roof

Crews are stripping and rebuilding the steep roof of Das Kaufhaus, the large merchandise location positioned near the entrance of the Germany Pavilion. The work is happening on both sides of the building, though each has reached a different stage.

On the west side — the face that looks toward the Italy Pavilion — sections of the familiar red and burgundy shingles are still in place, while other portions have already been removed, exposing the dark underlayment beneath. The lower roof slopes and several dormers still retain parts of their previous patterned finish, leaving the building caught somewhere between its familiar look and the refurbishment underway.

The east side is further along. Shingles have been removed across the main slope and its dormers, leaving a nearly uniform brown covering interrupted by taped seams, exposed fasteners, and the first signs of replacement material coming in. A small section of dark shingle has already appeared along one dormer, suggesting reconstruction has begun even as crews continue stripping other sections.

The good news for shoppers: Das Kaufhaus remains open during the project, so guests can still browse while work proceeds overhead. No completion date for the refurbishment has been announced.

The building's distinctive silhouette makes this more noticeable than a typical maintenance project. Rows of dormer windows break up several sharply pitched roof planes, while tall decorative chimney-like features line the ridge above the World Showcase promenade — all of which are hard to miss when they're mid-renovation.

A Little History on Das Kaufhaus

Das Kaufhaus is based on Freiburg's Historisches Kaufhaus, or Historical Merchants' Hall. The real building stands on Münsterplatz and traces its commercial role to the 14th century, with its current historic structure dating to 1520. Disney's version doesn't reproduce the building exactly — instead, Imagineers adapted its recognizable details into the broader storybook village assembled around the pavilion's central plaza.

The EPCOT structure was originally known as the Gild Hall and housed Der Bücherwurm, a shop selling German books and artwork. It became Das Kaufhaus in 1999, with its merchandise selection evolving over the years since.

Germany Pavilion Refurbishments Have Been Ongoing

The roof project is the latest in a series of closures and repairs happening throughout the Germany Pavilion. Der Teddybär reopened in July after a brief refurbishment, restoring its selection of toys and Steiff bears, and the pavilion's Kidcot activity station also moved inside the reopened store near its registers.

In mid-July, work was also affecting the pavilion restrooms, Volkskunst, and Stein Haus. Das Kaufhaus stayed available even when those neighboring retail locations temporarily closed, making its continued operation during the roof refurbishment especially handy for guests.

The Germany Pavilion's architecture is designed to feel collected rather than copied from a single place. At its center stands a version of the St. George and the Dragon statue found in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, surrounded by decorated storefronts and a clock tower featuring a glockenspiel. Beyond the shops, Germany is home to Biergarten Restaurant, which has served guests since EPCOT's opening day, recreating an outdoor Bavarian festival at night with German food and live musical performances. Karamell-Küche has become another major draw, producing caramel-covered treats using Werther's Original caramel. Together, these spots mean Germany functions primarily through food, retail, atmosphere, and entertainment rather than a headline ride.

Roof Work Around World Showcase Isn't New

Roof replacements aren't unprecedented in World Showcase. EPCOT's Norway Pavilion underwent similar work at the Stave Church Gallery in 2024, when wooden shingles and weather-resistant underlayment were removed and replaced while the exhibit inside remained accessible to guests.

For now, the Germany Pavilion continues operating around its latest construction project. The bare roof may temporarily alter one of World Showcase's most recognizable skylines, but the scope of the work suggests Disney is focused on preserving the building rather than changing its role. Once the shingles return, most guests may never realize how extensive the refurbishment became — but until then, Das Kaufhaus offers an unusually candid look at the practical maintenance hidden beneath EPCOT's carefully engineered illusion.
