Disney has officially confirmed that Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Forbidden Eye will close to all guests beginning September 8. How long the iconic Adventureland attraction will remain offline has not yet been announced.
A Disneyland Legend Since 1995
Indiana Jones Adventure first opened at Disneyland on March 3, 1995, the result of Disney teaming up with George Lucas — before the Lucasfilm acquisition — to bring the beloved film franchise into Adventureland. The ride introduced a uniquely detailed archaeological queue and a then-new ride system that sent each troop transport pitching, bouncing, and swerving through the Temple of the Forbidden Eye.
Over the decades, the attraction became one of Disneyland's most popular thrill rides, complete with lava, skeletons, snakes, and its famous rolling-boulder finale. A second version, Temple of the Crystal Skull, opened at Tokyo DisneySea in 2001, trading the Cambodian-inspired ruins for a Central American temple and a hunt for the Fountain of Youth.
Notably, Tokyo DisneySea's version of the attraction has also been closed since August 2025 for an ongoing, lengthy refurbishment — with no reopening timeframe announced there either.
Recent History of Closures and Restorations
The Disneyland version has seen a fair amount of downtime lately. It closed from March 17 to April 24, 2025 — shortly after its 30th anniversary — and then again briefly in December 2025 for a quick maintenance stop. Earlier that January, Disneyland restored the complete Sallah pre-show, which had been missing since the resort's 2020 closure.
The attraction has continued to receive smaller but meaningful fixes along the way. Its long-dormant collapsing bridge effect returned in January 2026, using the ride vehicle's hydraulics and dropping ropes to simulate a failure. By April, the exit dig site had gained a new winch, a refreshed water tower, weathered crates, and newly displayed temple tablets.
Other Upcoming Closures at Disneyland Resort
Indiana Jones Adventure isn't the only attraction heading offline this season. Here's a quick look at what else is on the closure calendar:
- Haunted Mansion closes August 8 through August 20 for its annual seasonal conversion, returning on August 21 as Haunted Mansion Holiday — with Jack Skellington and The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) taking over the New Orleans Square attraction through the festive season.
- Mark Twain Riverboat also enters an open-ended refurbishment on September 8, with Disney yet to confirm a return date.
- Over at Disney California Adventure, Silly Symphony Swings has been closed since April 27. Parts of the dismantled ride have recently returned, but no reopening date has been announced.
- Looking further ahead, Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! is set to close permanently in 2027 after more than 20 years. Disney originally targeted early 2026 but delayed the shutdown to maintain family-friendly capacity while construction advances on Disney California Adventure's planned Avatar destination — though recent theories have suggested Disney could abandon that concept.
