Just when Disney Parks fans thought the debate had been settled, Walt Disney World Resort has issued what appears to be its definitive final word on the controversial hanging corpse in the Stretching Room of the Haunted Mansion. The scene has drawn criticism in recent years from guests who feel the depiction of suicide may be triggering, but the latest update from the resort makes one thing clear: the prop is here to stay.

A Tumultuous Few Weeks for Haunted Mansion Fans

The saga began on July 24, when Magic Kingdom Park guests noticed that the hanging corpse was no longer visible in one of the Stretching Room pre-show areas. Many fans immediately assumed that Walt Disney World Resort had quietly responded to calls for the scene's removal. The timing seemed to add fuel to that theory, as the attraction was already in the middle of a multi-month exterior refurbishment — leading some to believe Disney had decided to refresh the interior of the 54-year-old ride as well.

The reaction was swift. As tends to happen with any change at the Disney parks, fans voiced strong opinions almost immediately. Within 24 hours, Walt Disney World Resort stepped in to clarify: the hanging corpse had not been removed. Instead, the scrim that normally conceals it during most of the left Stretching Room scene had become so dirty — possibly due to debris from the ongoing construction — that the doll was simply no longer visible through it.

By July 27, the resort had cleaned the scrim, and the hanging corpse was once again visible. Most guests assumed that would be the end of the story. Then August 5 arrived.

Disney World Updates the Stretching Room — Again

On Wednesday, WDWNT reported that Walt Disney World Resort had made yet another change to the affected Stretching Room. Just over a week after cleaning the scrim, Disney made the surprising decision to replace it entirely.

Even after being cleaned, the old scrim still showed some staining from years of accumulated dust and debris. The new scrim features shading around the triangular ceiling patterns to match the Haunted Mansion's signature aged aesthetic, while showing no obvious signs of real wear and tear.

The lighting in the left Stretching Room has also been adjusted, making the hanging corpse even more visible as it swings above guests. Notably, the scrim in the right Stretching Room — which never became dirty enough to obscure the doll — has not been replaced.

Is This Really the End of the Debate?

The question of whether Disney would ever remove the hanging corpse from the Haunted Mansion has been a topic of conversation well beyond fan forums. The Walt Disney Company has made a number of cultural sensitivity updates to its parks and entertainment properties over the years, including adding content warnings to older films on Disney+, replacing the Song of the South (1946)-themed Splash Mountain with Tiana's Bayou Adventure, and updating the depiction of Native Americans on Peter Pan's Flight with input from cultural experts and community activists.

The Haunted Mansion's Stretching Room scene has come up in those conversations before. In 2021, during a refurbishment of the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland Resort, Disney Imagineer Michele Hobbs acknowledged that the scene had been discussed internally.

In more recent years, however, insider reports have suggested that Disney is no longer actively considering removing the scene. Walt Disney World Resort's decision to replace the scrim and improve the lighting around the hanging corpse appears to confirm those reports — at least for now, the scene isn't going anywhere.
