Disney's Hollywood Studios has been evolving at a rapid pace, but one of its newest additions has carried a wonderfully old-school feeling. Over the last several months, guests wandering through the Walt Disney Studios Lot courtyard have been stumbling into something special — Disney characters roaming freely, no queue required.

Instead of standing in a traditional meet-and-greet line, visitors might suddenly find themselves playing a game with Donald Duck or sharing an unexpected moment with Rapunzel. It has felt like a genuine return to the kind of spontaneous character interactions that longtime Disney fans remember so fondly.

The Courtyard Experience That Captured Everyone's Hearts

The roaming character interactions began when the Walt Disney Studios Lot courtyard opened on May 26. Since then, Disney has used the space in a way that feels refreshingly different from a standard character location. Guests don't necessarily know exactly what they'll encounter when they step inside.

Rapunzel has braided hair with guests. Mulan has practiced warrior poses. Donald Duck has even played "duck, duck, Donald" with visitors on the lawn. These are relatively simple interactions — and that's a big part of what has made them so much fun.

Disney parks have become increasingly structured experiences. Guests plan dining reservations, Lightning Lane selections, entertainment schedules, and traditional character meet-and-greets. The courtyard characters have offered something genuinely different: you don't plan for these moments. You simply stumble into them. That's what has given the experience its "vintage Disney" feeling — the kind where an unexpected character encounter could become one of the most memorable parts of your entire park day.

Fans Had a Reason to Worry

A big question was hanging over all of this. With The Magic of Disney Animation preparing to open on September 14, many guests and fans wondered whether the roaming characters were simply a temporary measure while the new experience was being finished.

That concern wasn't unfounded. Several characters currently appearing outside are scheduled to move into dedicated meet-and-greet locations inside Off the Page, the character experience within The Magic of Disney Animation. Disney has confirmed six character locations there, featuring Rapunzel, Mulan, Chip 'n' Dale, Donald and Daisy, Goofy, and Stitch — each meet-and-greet connected to a specific animation department inside the building.

Once those characters received permanent homes indoors, Disney could have ended the courtyard encounters entirely. Thankfully, that isn't happening.

Disney Makes It Official: Roaming Characters Are Staying

During a media preview for The Magic of Disney Animation, Disney confirmed that roaming characters will continue appearing in the courtyard after the new experience opens on September 14. This wasn't simply a temporary experiment while Disney finished the building — the concept is sticking around.

There will be one notable change, however. Guests shouldn't expect the exact same characters currently roaming outside to continue doing so once they move into Off the Page. Instead, Disney plans to introduce a different rotation of characters in the courtyard. Disney has not yet announced exactly which characters will appear outside after September 14.

That unknown element could actually make the experience even more interesting. Part of the charm of roaming characters comes from not knowing exactly who you'll find. A fixed lineup with posted times can quickly turn into another attraction guests feel they need to schedule — a changing rotation keeps some of that spontaneity intact.

Disney is even taking the idea beyond the courtyard. Characters may also roam inside The Magic of Disney Animation after it opens, giving Hollywood Studios another opportunity to create those unexpected moments throughout the area rather than restricting every character to a designated backdrop.

What's Opening on September 14

The roaming characters will complement a much larger collection of experiences arriving with The Magic of Disney Animation. The attraction opens September 14 as the final piece of the Walt Disney Studios Lot transformation. Along with Off the Page, the area includes Olaf Draws, the Drawn to Wonderland playground, and the Once Upon A Studio Theater.

That means guests will have structured experiences inside while still having opportunities for something far less predictable outside. Character meet-and-greets aren't disappearing — guests who specifically want to meet Rapunzel, Stitch, Donald, or another favorite can still seek out those experiences inside Off the Page. But the courtyard offers an entirely different kind of Disney interaction.

"Vintage Disney" Isn't Going Anywhere

Sometimes the smallest additions make the biggest difference in a theme park. Hollywood Studios has major attractions, elaborate lands, nighttime entertainment, and plenty of experiences that require significant planning. Yet watching a Disney character unexpectedly wander across a courtyard and start interacting with guests can create something a carefully scheduled experience can't always replicate.

Disney could have easily ended the roaming character concept once The Magic of Disney Animation opened. Instead, the company has confirmed that the courtyard will maintain an ongoing roaming character presence going forward. We still don't know which characters will take over outside, and Disney hasn't revealed what the new rotation will look like — but the biggest question has been answered.

That little piece of "vintage Disney" isn't disappearing when the doors to The Magic of Disney Animation open on September 14. It's becoming a permanent part of the new-look Hollywood Studios area.
