The Liberty Square ride drew widespread media coverage over the weekend when guests reported that the hanging corpse had disappeared from at least one of the stretching rooms.

What Guests Were Seeing — and Not Seeing

Reports first emerged on Friday, July 24, that the hanging corpse had vanished from at least one pre-show stretching room inside the Haunted Mansion. For days, Disney Parks fans wondered whether Walt Disney World had quietly completed a long-rumored cultural sensitivity change to the attraction, removing what some guests consider a triggering reference to suicide.

For those unfamiliar with the scene: while guests are gathered in the stretching room, the Ghost Host informs them that the chamber has no windows and no doors, leaving them to wonder how they'll escape. "Of course, there's always my way," he says — the room goes dark, a pre-recorded scream plays, and a doll hanging on a noose drops from the ceiling overhead. The lights return, the pre-show ends, and a door "magically" appears, sending guests on their way to board their Doom Buggys for the main ride experience.

Amid an ongoing exterior refurbishment of the Haunted Mansion and following years of cultural sensitivity changes at Disney parks around the world, many fans assumed the disappearance of one hanging figure signaled a permanent retirement of the effect. However, the scene continued to play out in at least one other stretching room, leaving it unclear whether the missing figure was a temporary fix or the beginning of a broader change.

Walt Disney World Has Made Its Decision

On July 27, WDWNT visited the Haunted Mansion at Magic Kingdom Park and reported that the hanging corpse had reappeared in the stretching room where it had previously gone missing. According to a statement provided to the outlet by Disney, the doll had actually remained in place the entire time — it simply couldn't be seen because dirt and grime on the scrim that conceals the figure during most of the stretching room scene had made it invisible to guests.

The scrim has since been cleaned, and the hanging corpse is once again visible to guests experiencing the Haunted Mansion pre-show. So for fans who were worried about a permanent change, the Ghost Host's dramatic finale is very much still haunting the stretching room at Magic Kingdom Park.
