Walt Disney World is always evolving — new attractions, updated entertainment, reimagined areas — and Disney's Animal Kingdom is right in the middle of some of its biggest changes since the park first opened in 1998. But while most of the buzz has centered on what's being built, another shift could have an equally significant impact on the guest experience: the park's operating hours.

Animal Kingdom's Early Closing Time Has Frustrated Guests for Years

Among Walt Disney World's four theme parks, Animal Kingdom has always operated on a different schedule. Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, and Disney's Hollywood Studios regularly stay open well into the evening, but Animal Kingdom often closes between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., with 8:30 p.m. among its latest regular closing times. During stretches of the year when daylight lasts longer, guests can find themselves heading for the exit while the sun is still up.

Disney has understandable reasons for that schedule. Unlike the other parks, Animal Kingdom is home to hundreds of live animals with carefully managed daily routines. Shorter operating hours help reduce disruptions and allow animal care teams to maintain feeding schedules, veterinary care, habitat maintenance, and overnight operations that continue long after guests have left. Even so, many visitors have long hoped Disney would find a way to keep the park open later while still maintaining that high standard of animal care.

Guests Want More Time to Experience Pandora at Night

One of the most common complaints about Animal Kingdom's schedule is that many visitors never truly get to experience the park after dark — and that became especially noticeable after Pandora – The World of Avatar opened in 2017.

Pandora was designed to transform after sunset. Bioluminescent pathways glow, colorful plants light up, and the entire land takes on a completely different atmosphere than it has during the day. Unfortunately, many guests miss that experience entirely because the park often closes before full darkness or not long afterward.

Fans have argued for years that Animal Kingdom feels incomplete without seeing Pandora at night. Others simply want to enjoy attractions like Avatar Flight of Passage and Na'vi River Journey later in the evening, when temperatures cool down and crowds begin to ease.

Tropical Americas Could Lead to Longer Hours

Disney may soon have a compelling reason to rethink that traditional schedule. The park is currently undergoing major construction for Pueblo Esperanza, an expansion that will replace the former DinoLand area. The new land will bring Encanto and Indiana Jones attractions, along with dining, shopping, and entertainment — all themed to the Tropical Americas — giving guests more reasons than ever to spend a full day at the park.

As Disney adds more experiences, demand to stay longer will likely grow with it. More attractions naturally encourage visitors to linger rather than trying to squeeze everything into a shorter operating day. Disney will still need to balance guest expectations with the animals' needs, but new operational strategies could make extended hours possible while maintaining the park's conservation mission.

Could Animal Kingdom Stay Open Until 9 or 10 p.m.?

If Disney does eventually extend Animal Kingdom's schedule, guests probably shouldn't expect midnight closings like Magic Kingdom. A more realistic possibility would be regular closing times around 9 p.m. or even 10 p.m. — giving visitors an extra hour or two to enjoy attractions, have dinner, and experience Pandora after dark.

That additional time could make it much easier for families to fit everything into a single visit without feeling rushed. Longer evenings could also spread crowds more evenly throughout the day, reduce peak wait times during the afternoon, and give guests greater flexibility to explore trails, enjoy entertainment, and dine at a more relaxed pace.

A Long-Requested Change May Finally Make Sense

Animal Kingdom's ongoing transformation could influence more than just the attractions guests experience — it could reshape how guests plan an entire day at the park and change expectations for what a full Animal Kingdom visit looks like in the years ahead.

Nothing has been officially announced, but if there were ever a time for Disney to reconsider Animal Kingdom's famously early closing schedule, it may be now. With more attractions on the way and guest demand expected to grow, extending the park's evening hours could become one of the most welcomed operational changes Disney has made in years.
