Horror fans, your dreams — or perhaps your nightmares — are about to come true. Back in July, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Paramount Pictures had officially announced a reboot of Wes Craven's 1984 classic A Nightmare on Elm Street. Now, a fan-made trailer is circulating online and stirring up plenty of excitement ahead of the real thing.
Paramount's Big Announcement
According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Paramount Pictures has closed a deal for the U.S. rights to the original screenplay of A Nightmare on Elm Street, the movie written and directed by Wes Craven that kicked off the popular horror franchise featuring the killer with the metal-claw gloved hand and burned face, and will adapt it into a new feature."
The new film will come from Paramount's genre label, Paramount Primal, led by producers J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules — the team behind films such as Barbarian and Friendship. The U.S. rights are being licensed from the Craven estate, which includes Craven's widow Iya Labunka and his son Jonathan Craven. The two will produce the new film alongside Marc Toberoff, an attorney-turned-producer who specializes in copyright law. Lifshitz and Margules will executive produce for Paramount Primal.
Labunka shared her excitement in a statement:
"We look forward to bringing the world of Wes Craven's Nightmare on Elm Street to a new and completely engaged generation of fans. We know that Wes would have been thrilled to see how horror is taking its long overdue place in the cultural canon. We can't wait for all of us to sit together in a dark theater – around the campfire of today – as the next chapter of the Nightmare story unfolds."
A Fan-Made Trailer Sets the Mood
While an official trailer has yet to arrive, YouTube channel Wilson Cleveland — known for crafting convincing concept trailers — has released a rather impressive fan-made teaser for the upcoming film. The video pulls footage from several sequels in the franchise, pairs it with a spine-tingling narration from the dream demon himself, and sets it all to Michael Jackson's "Thriller." It's a fun, atmospheric preview of what could be.
The trailer leans into the idea of a legacy sequel of sorts, though that concept sits a little at odds with the confirmed details: the new film is set to be "set in the world of A Nightmare on Elm Street, based on the original screenplay." It also raises the question of whether the reboot should return to the franchise's darker roots or lean into the campiness that defined some of the later sequels.
A Long History on Elm Street
Directed by Wes Craven, the original 1984 film launched a sprawling multimedia franchise — including sequels, spinoffs, crossovers, a television series, a 2010 reboot, novels, and comic books. The rights to A Nightmare on Elm Street were previously held by New Line Cinema, which became part of Warner Bros. following its acquisition in 2008.
The 2010 reboot, produced by New Line Cinema and Platinum Dunes and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, was a box-office success — grossing $117.7 million worldwide against a $35 million budget — but was critically panned and largely rejected by audiences for failing to live up to the 1984 original. Jackie Earle Haley took on the role of Freddy Krueger in that film, following Robert Englund, who had played the character across eight Elm Street films and a mostly forgotten TV series.
Who Will Play Freddy Krueger?
Robert Englund's return to the role can be ruled out. While he reprised Freddy Krueger in a Halloween special of the '80s-set series The Goldbergs, he told Variety in 2023 that he's "too old and thick to play Freddy" and "can't do fight scenes for more than one take anymore," citing a bad neck, bad back, and arthritis in his right wrist. He did tell ComicBook.com in 2024, however, that he would be open to voicing the character in an animated reboot, should such a project ever materialize.
Jackie Earle Haley is also unlikely to return, as Paramount appears to be pursuing a fresh adaptation tied to the original film while appealing to modern audiences.
As of now, there is no release date for the new A Nightmare on Elm Street.
