It's a big season ahead for Harry Potter fans. Not only is HBO's highly anticipated reboot set to premiere on Christmas Day, but a brand-new illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is also on its way — and early previews of the artwork are already turning heads.
A New Look at a Beloved Book
Bloomsbury will release its illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince on October 6, 2026. The book — originally published in 2005 — follows Harry through his sixth year at Hogwarts as Voldemort's influence grows stronger. With Dumbledore's guidance, Harry begins uncovering the Dark Lord's past and the secret behind his immortality, while Draco Malfoy is pulled into a dangerous mission of his own.
Early previews of the new edition's artwork have already been shared, depicting scenes such as the Dark Mark's appearance over Hogwarts, Harry and Tonks approaching the school gates, and Trelawney predicting tragedy within the castle. The book's cover features Harry and Dumbledore inside the cave where they attempt to retrieve a Horcrux, only to be confronted by Inferi.
The illustrations are the work of British illustrator Levi Pinfold, who steps in to replace Jim Kay, the artist behind the previous five installments in the illustrated series.
What the 2009 Film Left Out
For fans who felt the 2009 film adaptation didn't quite do the book justice, this new edition is a welcome reminder of just how rich the source material is. The film made significant changes, cutting much of Voldemort's backstory and reducing the mystery surrounding the Half-Blood Prince. It also removed the Battle of the Astronomy Tower and Dumbledore's funeral, while adding an original Death Eater attack on the Burrow and shifting more focus toward Hogwarts romance.
HBO's Reboot Has a Chance to Set Things Right
Of course, all of this comes ahead of HBO's new Harry Potter series, which premieres on Christmas Day and will adapt each of JK Rowling's seven novels across separate seasons. Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton will take on the roles of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger, respectively.
Season one will tackle Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone — with the franchise officially moving away from the Sorcerer's Stone title — with Francesca Gardiner serving as showrunner and Succession's Mark Mylod directing several episodes. Filming took place at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, and the longer TV format is expected to restore characters, storylines, and details that were cut from the 2001 film, including Nicolas Flamel, Peeves, and Harry's life before Hogwarts.
When the series eventually reaches the sixth book, HBO will have the opportunity to spend more time on Tom Riddle's backstory, properly develop the Half-Blood Prince mystery, give Harry and Ginny's relationship more room to breathe, and adapt the book's larger climax and emotional aftermath in full.
