Magic Kingdom is in the middle of quite a construction boom right now. Between the Cars-themed Piston Peak taking shape in Frontierland and Villains Land rising behind Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, there's no shortage of exciting changes on the horizon. And now, another beloved attraction is officially entering its transformation era — Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress.

What We Know About the Permit

A permit has just been filed for a notice of commencement of general construction at the Carousel of Progress show building. The contractor named in the permit is Mecca Productions, a scenic design company with prior experience working on Disney parks projects. The filing suggests that hands-on construction work is set to begin very soon.

What's Changing?

Carousel of Progress closed on July 5th to undergo a major transformation. The updates will include changes to the ride scenes and the attraction's overall timeline. A Walt Disney animatronic is also planned as part of a new pre-show experience. Walls went up outside the show building the very day after closure, and crowds gathered on that final day to pay their respects to the previous version of the show.

This won't be the first time the attraction has seen updates — in fact, keeping up with the passage of time is central to the show's identity. The former finale scene was added in the 1990s and depicted a "future" that has, in many ways, already arrived.

When Will It Reopen?

The updated Carousel of Progress is estimated to reopen in 2027. Concept art for the changes has already been revealed, and we'll be sure to keep you updated as more details come to light.
